How George Orwell taught himself to write well

Most people try to become good writers by… writing.

Starting with a blank screen.

Forcing themselves to come up with something.

That’s like making your own song on the first day of piano lessons.

It doesn’t work.

You don’t need creativity.

You need reps.

And the best reps you can do are simple: Copy good writing by hand.

It’s how some of the best writers ever trained.

You can’t argue with George Orwell and Roald Dahl.

Big G.O. was famous for rewriting passages from people he admired, to study clarity and rhythm.

Roald Dahl copied Ernest Hemingway’s sentence structure early in his career - writing out paragraphs to understand rhythm.

Can’t argue with that.
